MWH Constructors Awarded $196M Contract From Trinity River Authority Of Texas
One of three projects in the U.S. to utilize the Cambi Thermal Hydrolysis Process, enabling new facility to produce higher quality biosolids, capture and treat odors more effectively
MWH Constructors (MWHC) has been awarded a $196M contract by the Trinity River Authority of Texas (TRA) to provide construction and start-up/commissioning support for the Phase III-B Solids Management Improvement Project for the Central Regional Wastewater System (CRWS), located in west Dallas. MWHC is a leading global construction firm focused on water and energy with more than $600M in recently completed and current work in Texas. Upgrades to this facility will allow for the replacement of the lime stabilization process, provide a significant reduction in the overall volume of biosolids produced and enhanced diversification of end uses for the biosolids.
TRA’s CRWS plant began operations in 1959 as the first regional wastewater facility of its kind, serving the Texas cities of Irving, Grand Prairie and Farmers Branch, plus a portion of western Dallas. The system is now one of the largest in Texas and has expanded to serve approximately 1.2 million people. CRWS is capable of providing treatment for 162 million gallons per day (mgd); the treatment process removes 99 percent of conventional pollutants from raw wastewater and can handle daily maximum flows of 335 mgd and a two-hour peak flow maximum of 405 mgd.
“It is a tremendous privilege to be selected by TRA for this important project,” said Blair Lavoie, president of MWH Constructors. “MWH Constructors is committed to providing superior service, and we look forward to partnering with TRA for a project that will meet the needs of the community for years to come.”
CRWS includes a treatment plant and more than 200 miles of collection system pipeline. The project aims to produce clean, clear effluent that goes to the Trinity River through enhanced biosolids handling and processing, pre-dewatering and thickening, anaerobic digestion, thermal hydrolysis and leading-edge technology.
“As someone who’s done contract work at this TRA wastewater treatment plant for the past 15 years, we are excited and pleased to be leading this significant plant improvement project,” said Arthur Daugherty, project manager for MWH Constructors. “Familiarity with the facility and existing relationships with the employees, combined with MWH Constructors’ expertise, uniquely positions our team to deliver the highest quality results to TRA.”
TRA’s Phase III-B Solids Management Improvement Project is only the third in the United States to install the Cambi Thermal Hydrolysis Process (CambiTHP) at its wastewater treatment facility. Utilization of this process will enable CRWS to produce higher quality biosolids, capture and treat odors more effectively, and maximize biogas utilization and energy recovery to produce heat, steam and energy. MWHC brings particular expertise in the design, construction, and commissioning and start-up of CambiTHP systems. Out of 50 CambiTHP systems currently installed worldwide, MWH Constructors has provided services on more than 20.
Earlier this month, MWH Constructors was awarded a $955M contract by San Francisco Public Utilities Corporation to provide construction manager/general contractor services for the Southeast Water Pollution Control Plant Biosolids Digester Facilities Project in San Francisco, a project that will also use the CambiTHP process.
Construction at the facility is expected to begin in Fall 2017 with project completion expected by September 2021.
