Badger Meter Scientific Advisor to Explore Smart Water Metering during WaterSmart Innovations Conference, Oct. 5

Badger Meter, a leading global innovator and manufacturer of flow measurement, control and communications solutions, is at the forefront of smart water technologies in the water metering industry. The company recently shared its top reasons why utilities should leverage smart water metering solutions in their current and future water systems.

Badger Meter scientific advisor and professor at California State University, Dr. Wesley Schultz, will be exploring these reasons during a panel discussion, Friday, Oct. 5 at 9:40 a.m. PDT, at the upcoming WaterSmart Innovations (WSI) conference in Las Vegas.

When Looking To Deploy Smart Water Metering Solutions, Water Utilities Should Consider These Benefits, Which Dr. Schultz Will Highlight In Greater Detail At WSI:

  1. Use Data To Improve Return On Investment – Today’s water utilities are being asked to do more with less. Deploying a solution that leverages smart data can help. By implementing a smart water metering solution enabled by the Internet of Things (IoT), water utility managers can build a holistic view of their water system to allow for greater understanding and efficiency. Not all metering solutions share the data collected through a network with the utility. Smart water metering solutions where the utility owns the data, such as Badger Meter’s industry-leading cellular Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) solution, allows water utilities to get hands-on with their system’s data to better manager operations and address possible inefficiencies.
  2. Enable Interoperability – Utilities and cities need technology solutions that fit their needs. More and more, cities are integrating IoT technologies throughout their multitude of utility operations. By implementing IoT-enabled cellular networks, cities are not forced into a “one size fits all” solution. The city is not required to “buy” into an IoT technology for every operational need. With cellular-based networks, the water utility can use the solution that works best for its specific needs.
  3. Keep Up With Evolving Technology – Without the need for traditional fixed-network infrastructure, an evolving cellular water solution requires less time and money. Where at one time water utilities were required to upgrade by installing new physical equipment around a city, “smarter” cellular water metering solutions, such as Badger Meter’s ORION® Cellular endpoints, primarily need software upgrades to remain up-to-date.
  4. Engage The Utility Customer – The IoT connects more devices than ever to one another. That means water utility customers can be more easily engaged with their water system, too. Using a cellular-enabled network, such as Badger Meter’s BEACON® Advanced Metering Analytics (AMA) managed solution, customers have access to their water usage information. For instance, water utilities using Badger Meter’s BEACON system can deploy the EyeOnWater® smartphone or desktop application, which allows water customers to understand their water usage through daily updates rather than waiting for their monthly (or sometimes quarterly) bill. Research is beginning to show that more hands-on understanding of water usage is helping utility customers to support a water utility’s conservation programs.

Continuing its industry leadership, in June 2018, Badger Meter announced that it joined the AT&T Smart City Alliance, a cross-industry collaboration to explore alternatives to providing cities access to world-class and smart city water metering solutions. As the collaboration grows, Badger Meter is pursuing innovations that are helping water utilities benefit from the latest advancements in smart water metering solutions today and beyond.
