Lantania To Build Reclaimed Water Treatment Plant For PowerCo's Gigafactory In Sagunto

  • The facility, integrated into the plant’s wastewater treatment system (WWTP), will have a treatment capacity of 6,240 m³ per day
  • It will treat water from the municipal wasterwater plant, upgrading it for use in the battery plant’s cooling towers

Lantania has been awarded the contract to build a reclaimed water treatment plant for PowerCo’s gigafactory in Sagunto (Valencia). The infrastructure, water and energy group will develop a dedicated treatment unit integrated into the battery plant’s wastewater treatment facility (WWTP). The installation will treat water from the Sagunto municipal wastewater plant, upgrading it for use as process water at the facility. The contract strengthens the company’s presence in industrial infrastructure linked to the efficient management of resources.

The plant will have a treatment capacity of 6,240 m³ per day and will process effluent from the Sagunto WWTP using an advanced system designed to make it suitable for industrial use. The treated water will be used in the battery plant’s cooling towers and will form part of the auxiliary infrastructure being developed by PowerCo in Sagunto.

The technical solution includes lamella clarification with chemical dosing to remove carbonates and bicarbonates and reduce water hardness, as well as sand filtration and sludge dewatering. This combination ensures both the quality of the reclaimed water and the overall efficiency of the process. The system enables integrated decarbonation, improving water performance within cooling circuits. This solution will ensure a stable supply of process water for the gigafactory, significantly reducing its demand for potable water, which is a key factor in high-consumption industrial environments.

PowerCo’s Sagunto facility is a large-scale battery cell manufacturing plant (gigafactory) designed to supply the electric mobility sector. Its operations require significant volumes of water for processes such as cooling and industrial cleaning, making the new reclaimed water treatment plant essential to ensuring an efficient, sustainable supply aligned with circular economy principles.

PowerCo is the global battery cell manufacturer founded by the Volkswagen Group in 2022. The company is currently building three gigafactories in Salzgitter (Germany), Sagunto (Spain) and St. Thomas (Canada). With a strategic investment of over €3B and an expected capacity of more than 60 GWh per year, PowerCo Spain will produce battery cells for up to 500,000 vehicles a year.
