Kemira And Bucher Unipektin Cooperate To Offer Better Sludge Treatment

Kemira Municipal and Industrial segment has started co-operation in sludge treatment with Bucher Unipektin, part of the Swiss Bucher Group. The goal of the co-operation is to provide to wastewater treatment plants the most efficient and cost performing method to improve sludge handling.

Kemira is a global leader in water and wastewater treatment chemicals and possesses extensive know-how and expertise in the area. For sludge conditioning Kemira has developed the patented KemiCond process which improves dry solid content, reduces volumes with more than 50%, improves dewatering capacity by 20 to 40% and reduces bacteria and malodors. These benefits allow reduced cost for incineration, minimization of sludge transports through residential areas as well as improvements in the working environment.

Bucher Unipektin is the leading manufacturer of machinery and components for fruit juice production as well as a recognized supplier for sludge dewatering and vacuum drying plants. The unique HP hydraulic press technology developed by Bucher Unipektin and initially used in pressing of fruit juice, can also be used in sewage sludge dewatering.

The KemiCond process in combination with Bucher dewatering is the most efficient method to reduce sludge volumes and qualify the sludge for land application. This has been proven by a full scale installation found in Käppala wastewater plant near Stockholm, Sweden.

The more efficient sludge conditioning and dewatering the easier and cheaper sludge disposal becomes. "The costs for sludge treatment – in terms of manpower, equipment and energy – accounts for about 50% of the overall cost of wastewater treatment. Handling sludge in a sustainable manner reduces volumes, decreases costs and makes the sludge odorless and hygienic. The need for sustainable treatment technologies and careful managing of our most valuable asset – water – is greater now than ever. The treated sludge can be used in different ways – for agriculture, landfill, and production of soil products and for incineration." says Pekka Ojanpää, President of Kemira Municipal & Industrial.
