IACMA, a new carbon manufacturing association, holds successful first meeting

More than 40 representatives from almost 20 activated carbon manufacturing companies worldwide attended the First Annual Meeting of the International Activated Carbon Manufacturers Association (IACMA).

IACMA is a new organization dedicated to promoting the growth and awareness of the activated carbon manufacturing industry worldwide.

Held March 8-9, 2001, at the Mission Inn in Howey-in-the-Hills, FL, the meeting featured guest speakers who addressed issues potentially impacting the activated carbon industry--e.g., current environmental laws, standard-setting procedures and international initiatives. The speakers included:

  • Jeanne Bailey, regulatory affairs specialist, American Water Works Association;
  • Jeremy Brown, assistant manager, drinking water additives, NSF International;
  • Gerard Dagois, CEO, PICA SA; and
  • Cayce Parrish, acting chief, Standards & Risk Reduction Branch, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

"We were pleased to get such an enthusiastic turnout at our first meeting," said IACMA Executive Director Tucker Helmes, PhD, who encouraged all eligible companies worldwide to join IACMA and attend its next annual meeting in March 2002.

IACMA members approved a strategic plan that focuses on four priority areas: product stewardship, regulatory advocacy, testing methods and performance standards, and information exchange. They also approved a 2001 operating budget and elected Joe Fischette from Calgon Carbon as chairman; Bill Eubanks from Waterlink Barnebey Sutcliffe, vice chairman, and David Perry from Norit Americas, treasurer.

"The industry will be self-regulating," noted Helmes. "Members will adhere to strict standards of manufacturing and handling and comply with a code of ethics."
