Hungerford & Terry Special Pretreatment For Membranes For Geneva, Illinois Award-Winning Water Treatment Center

A new 8 MGD Black & Veatch engineered water treatment center has received the Project of the Year Award for 2009, as well as the Public Works Project Excellence Award by the Chicago Chapter of the American Public Works Association.

The facility incorporates pretreatment equipment, designed by Hungerford & Terry, upstream of the RO treatment system.

This Hungerford & Terry designed filter system offers protection to the RO membranes. The filters are sized to treat a flow of 3,576 gpm and remove 3 mg/L of iron and 0.06 mg/L of manganese. Hungerford & Terry's system includes four (4) 10' diameter x 30' long 2-cell horizontal filters and a custom forced draft degasifier to reduce 50 mg/L of CO2 in the RO effluent to 8 mg/L. (The degasifier is housed in the silo portion of the farm building and includes a 12' diameter x 16' tall FRP tower with 905 ft3 of polypropylene tower packing, plus a 16,900 cfm air blower.) This unique system is one of many H&T filter systems that currently pretreat water for RO/other membrane type treatment operations around the world.
