How Waterloo Harnessed Qatium's Digital Platform

Faced with limited visibility into their water distribution network, the City of Waterloo turned to Qatium’s water management platform for an innovative solution. Unlike most utilities, Waterloo lacked access to SCADA data and hydraulic models for its 430 km water distribution system, serving 150,000 customers. The city’s team needed an intuitive, low-cost tool to bridge this gap and empower operators without requiring specialized technical expertise.
Qatium’s AI-powered assistant, “Q,” delivered immediate results by creating a working digital replica of Waterloo’s system within minutes, using publicly available GIS data and historic records. This user-friendly platform enabled predictive modeling and real-time insights into network operations. By integrating live hydrant and SCADA data through APIs, the city could simulate real-world scenarios, such as valve isolations and pipe maintenance, to anticipate service impacts and enhance decision-making.
Waterloo’s partnership with Qatium is a testament to the power of accessible technology. The city is continuously refining its model, with plans to incorporate additional data streams for simulating fire flow capacity, water quality, and unidirectional flushing. Qatium’s platform not only improved Waterloo’s operational efficiency but also equipped its field teams with actionable insights, paving the way for a smarter, data-driven approach to water management.
