How To Intensify Phosphorus Removal While Reducing Costs And Footprint

Increasingly stringent phosphorus limits are driving wastewater utilities to seek treatment technologies that can deliver greater removal performance without requiring additional land or substantial increases in operating costs. Ballasted clarification intensifies the settling process by combining coagulants and polymers with dense particles, allowing flocs to settle much faster than in conventional clarification. Magnetite-based systems further enhance this approach by significantly reducing the footprint required for clarification, with some applications requiring only a fraction of the space of conventional clarifiers. The technology can also reduce chemical consumption compared with conventional filtration while eliminating the backwashing required by physical media filters, reducing water use and additional hydraulic loading on the treatment plant. Magnetite recovery systems reclaim and reuse the ballasting agent, with tertiary applications achieving high recovery rates. Ballasted clarifiers also offer flexibility during shock loads and can often be retrofitted into existing tanks, reducing construction requirements. Together, these characteristics provide wastewater utilities with an intensified approach to phosphorus removal that combines a smaller footprint, lower resource consumption, operational resilience, and flexibility for expanding or upgrading existing treatment infrastructure.
