Boulder Canyon Group Home needed a new wastewater system as an existing system was undersized and its pump system was no longer functioning. The renovated Inn will accommodate up to 24 clients and 17 staff members, creating the need for a reliable wastewater solution.

The 15.7-acre property presented significant challenges. Boulder Canyon Drive divided the property, Boulder Creek ran alongside the roadway, and steep, rocky terrain made construction on the west side of the property impractical. The new system also had to remain outside the Colorado Department of Transportation right of way. Building a road and blasting through the rocky terrain was not financially feasible, while plans for a drainfield south of the building were complicated by a new requirement for 80,000 gallons of fire cistern capacity.

Church Onsite Wastewater Consultants designed a system featuring a 1,000-gallon grease interceptor, two 2,000-gallon septic tanks, a 2,000-gallon recirculation/dosing tank, an Orenco AX-100 recirculating media filter, and a pressurized open-bottom sand filter incorporating 168 Infiltrator H-20 traffic-rated chambers beneath the parking lot.

CWS Excavating completed the installation, including the challenging task of craning septic tanks over the building to avoid shutting down the busy road. Limited space, difficult roadway access, and the need to coordinate installation around the fire cisterns added further complexity. The resulting design provided a practical solution for a constrained site while accommodating the facility’s wastewater treatment needs.
