From Breakthrough Technology Of The Decade To A Global Player – How Nereda Is Transforming Wastewater Treatment

Now reaching its 100th project, our wastewater treatment technology, Nereda, has set new industry standards and helped water utilities worldwide solve a range of important challenges. Learn more about Nereda and read about our 100th project.

Nereda technology, the original aerobic granular sludge technology (AGS), is a game-changing biological wastewater treatment solution that is transforming the industry with its efficient, effective, and environmentally friendly treatment of wastewater. Developed through a public-private partnership between Technical University Delft, Royal HaskoningDHV, STOWA, and various Dutch water authorities, Nereda technology has been implemented in 21 countries on six continents, with impressive results.

Nereda technology has had a significant impact on the energy efficiency of wastewater treatment plants, having saved a total of 58 million kWh of electricity to date. As a result, it has helped avoid the release of 41,100 tonnes of CO2 emissions. Nereda plants have also shown great success in purifying an impressive amount of wastewater - equivalent to what 6 billion people would generate in a single day - while being utilised in some of the largest wastewater treatment plants in the world.

The 100th wastewater treatment plant equipped with Nereda was recently sold in Fort Pierce, Florida, USA, which is the 12th Nereda plant in North America. This was done in collaboration with North American licensee, Aqua-Aerobic Systems, Inc. (AASI).

Nereda technology has made a significant contribution to water companies' efforts to reduce their carbon footprint while providing the best treatment results. The Fort Pierce wastewater treatment plant is a great example of how the technology can save costs and provide clean reuse water for nearby power plants, eliminating the need to draw on precious aquifers and benefiting the environment and local community.
