Design Features of Fiberglass Gates and Guides
General
Plasti-Fab has supplied fiberglass reinforced polyester gates and guides for many years. As a major supplier of these products, and through many years of experience, Plasti-Fab has developed techniques for making high strength, high quality fiberglass gates and guides to close tolerances and to stringent design specifications. Many major industrial companies regularly come to Plasti-Fab for design and construction of specialty fiberglass gates. If your project requires gates, consider the many advantages of fiberglass gates and utilize the experience of Plasti-Fab in application and design of FRP gates and guides.
Corrosion Resistant
Fiberglass gates and guides have excellent corrosion resistant properties. They will resist attack from numerous corrosive process fluids, acids, bases, salt water, concrete, sunlight, and atmospheric conditions. Special resins and fibers can be utilized in FRP gate construction for severely corrosive applications.
Low Maintenance - Long Life
Fiberglass gates and guides are virtually maintenance free. They resist corrosion and never need painting.
Light Weight - High Strength
Fiberglass reinforced polyester is well known for its high strength to weight ratio. This light weight feature is advantageous during installation and for hand pull stop plates.
Operate Smoothly, Low Friction
FRP guides and gates have a very low coefficient of friction: Fb = .38, Fo = .25. Most of all, FRP guide frames do not gall or get rough due to friction or chemical attack.
Easy to Install
Plasti-Fab gates and guides are factory assembled with rigid corners. Gates and guides are assembled and tested at the factory and shipped ready to install. Surface mounted gate guides simply fasten to the face of the concrete using anchor bolts. Embedded gate guides can be installed during channel construction or grouted into a blocked out slot in the channel.
Construction
All Plasti-Fab gates are molded to the exact size required. Molding results in gates with no exposed fibers or cut edges. Molded gates are flat and smooth. Rigid high density polyurethane foam is molded into the gate forming a totally encapsulated structural sandwich to produce a gate with the design strength required.
Gate Nomenclature
Slide Gates
Slide gates are mechanically operated gates that may be partially opened (modulated). They are handwheel or power operated (pneumatic, electric, or hydraulic). Slide gates can be supplied with J-seals for tight shut off applications requiring very low leakage rates.
Weir Gates
Weir gates are similar to slide gates except they normally push down to open. They may be flat crested, V-notched, sutro or similar. These gates are mechanically operated.
Stop Plates or Stop Gates
These are hand pulled plates or gates that are normally either in or out (no modulation).
Sluice Gates
Sluice gates are heavy duty, mechanically operated, cast iron structures for high operating heads. Machined metal to metal seating surfaces and adjustable wedging mechanisms make sluice gates particularly suitable for long term tight closure, high heads, and throttling conditions that frequently cause vibration and high stress. Our Heavy Duty Titeseal® Gates are often used for this application where corrossion is a problem.

Hand Lift Stop Plates
Construction
Plasti-Fab stop plates are individually molded of fiberglass reinforced polyester to the exact size, thus assuring resin rich sealed edges. Both sides of the plate are faced with a ten mil. C-Veil and finished smooth with a rich layer of ultraviolet inhibited resin to assure good weathering and corrosion resistance. Deflection is limited to not more than 1/360th of the plate width at maximum operating head. Plasti-Fab stop plates are laminated with a sandwich center core having a high density polyurethane closed cell foam for high rigidity, high strength, and water resistant integrity. Plasti-Fab stop plates are manufactured in accordance with the applicable portions of NBS 15-69, and ASTM C-582 "Specifications for Self Supporting Corrosion Resistant Structures" and inspected in accordance with ASTM D-2563.
Slide Gates
Self Contained Mechanically Operated
Gate Construction
Slide gates are manufactured of gray fiberglass reinforced polyester containing ultraviolet inhibitors. The surfaces are resin rich and free of exposed fibers, cracks, entrapped air, blisters, porosity, pits and dry spots. The gates are suitably reinforced to withstand the specified maximum operating head with a deflection of less than 1/360th of the gate width. The gates are flat and level. The stem mounting hardware is type 304 stainless steel (T-316 optional).
Frame Construction
The frames are constructed from Plasti-Fab designed FRP pultrusions with polymeric fiber surfacing material for high corrosion resistance. They are gray in color with ultraviolet absorbers in the resin to assure weather resistance. Frame corners are reinforced with FRP contoured butt straps, bonded to the frame. The corners will withstand a torque of 500 ft. lbs. without damage. The FRP channel support for the handwheel lift will not deflect more than .125 inches when subjected to a force of four times the maximum handwheel pull. The stem and all nuts and bolts are 304 stainless steel (T-316 optional).
Maintenance of Gates
Other than periodic cleaning, no maintenance should be required on the gate. The guide channel should be inspected periodically to assure it is free from debris so the gate can operate smoothly.
Heavy Duty Titeseal® Copolymer Gate
- For Seating and Unseating Heads Over 5 ft.
- Very Low Leakage
- Designed For Ease of Maintenance
- Corrosion Resistant
- Built to Any Size
- Simple to Install
Plasti-Fab heavy duty gates are designed for high head, (over 5') low leakage applications. Heavy duty gates have been classified as sluice gates by others in the industry, however per AWWA Specification C501, a sluice gate is a heavy duty mechanically operated cast iron structure with metal to metal seats and bronze wedges.
