Choosing the right communication network is crucial to building a successful, smart utility. The quality of the communication technology selected determines whether the data will be transmitted efficiently, securely, and reliably over the long haul. It’s not a decision to be taken lightly.
Too often, however, many utility managers do not think long term when making a network purchase, only focusing on current needs rather than how that network will support their operation in the future, says Tom Galuska, Senior Product Manager of AMI/AMR water products at Sensus, a Xylem brand. “If you have a network designed for today that doesn’t have the bandwidth to accept additional features in the future, then the utility operation will be limited.”
