EMASESA's Internationally Recognised Embalse Digital 5.0 Project Utilises The Xylem Vue Platform To Transform Data Into Smart Decisions For Water Management

EMASESA has collaborated with Xylem Vue to integrate and analyse, on a single platform, 200 water supply sectors and more than 313,000 smart drinking water meters, which generate around 7.5 million daily readings from 1.4 million people across twelve municipalities in the Seville metropolitan area (Spain)
The aim: to detect leaks, faults or unusual consumption patterns
EMASESA, the water supply and wastewater treatment utility for the Seville metropolitan area, received a gold accolade from the International Water Association (IWA) at the 15th IWA Project Innovation Awards ceremony, held in Glasgow in early October.
The award recognized EMASESA’s project, The Digital Reservoir: a new paradigm for integrated water cycle management based on cyber-physical systems, in the Smart Systems and the Digital Water Economy category. This international accolade, which recognizes digital solutions that have the potential to transform the water sector, acknowledges the achievements of one of the digital transformation accelerator projects included in EMASESA’s 2030 Strategic Plan.
The Andalusian water utility serves nearly 1.4 million people in twelve municipalities in the Seville metropolitan area (Spain). Its commitment to digital transformation, exemplified by the Digital Reservoir 5.0 project, has enabled the company to move beyond sensor-based monitoring to improve decision-making by integrating and analyzing the data collected.
XYLEM VUE TECHNOLOGY: TURNING 7.5 MILLION DAILY READINGS INTO SMART DECISIONS
This transformation required integrating data from 200 water network sectors, more than 313,000 smart meters that generate around 7.5 million readings per day, water quality data, real-time external data, numerical modeling, and AI algorithms into a single platform. The goal is to detect leaks, malfunctions, and unusual consumption patterns.
The company partnered with Xylem Vue to implement part of the digital transformation process, harnessing its technology and vendor-agnostic platform to integrate, consolidate, and analyze information from the various systems already in use at the utility. According to José Luis López, head of EMASESA’s Digital Transformation Division, “the key is not to set up isolated solutions, but to ensure that all of them are connected and communicate with one another.” For López, “having a data lake, a centralized repository where we can consolidate all the information and develop it to create new capabilities, has been extremely valuable. Furthermore, EMASESA’s operational experience and requirements have helped us to refine and consolidate solutions under real-world operating conditions, improving the platform’s reliability and performance.”
María Gil, Country Manager for Spain at Xylem Vue, describes the role of the Xylem Vue platform in this project as a “transformation enabler.” The architecture underpinning the Digital Reservoir 5.0 consists of three layers. The first is the Smart Water Engine, which integrates all the data into a single model. The second layer deploys modules for the three areas of the integrated water cycle: water supply, wastewater treatment, and water resources. The third layer focuses on operational intelligence to support decision-making.
According to Gil, “this project highlights the effectiveness of public-private partnerships, in which Xylem’s digital technology and its Xylem Vue platform, combined with EMASESA’s operational expertise, have complemented each other to tailor the solution to the utility’s needs and challenges.”
This award further strengthens EMASESA's position as a leading public utility in sustainability, the circular economy, and integrated water cycle management.
Xylem Vue is a secure, integrated, and agnostic analytics and software platform that can capture data from any source, including legacy solutions. The platform enables water utilities to maximize investments already made in existing technologies while moving further along their digital journey and breaking down data silos to provide a holistic, 360-degree view of their system. Xylem Vue offers a broad portfolio of modular applications, helping utilities unlock the true power of their data and solve their most pressing water cycle challenges more efficiently.
