Ecologix Environmental Systems Establishes High-Efficiency Wastewater Treatment System For Russky Island

Integrated Bio-Reactor system supports new 30,000-population community while preserving remote island’s delicate environmental balance

Recently at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) 2012 Conference, Ecologix Environmental Systems announced the installation of an advanced, end-to-end wastewater treatment facility on Russky Island, Russia. The project is part of the Russian government’s $6 billion, two-year infrastructure and development project for the island, located off the coast of Vladivostok in the Sea of Japan.

The newly installed Ecologix Integrated Bio-Reactor (IBR) helps make a sparsely populated part of Russia habitable for what will be the largest community to ever live there – an estimated 30,000 residents will attend or work at the island’s new Far Eastern Federal University.

“This installation is the culmination of two years of collaborative project development, working with Russian government officials to deliver a system that offers high performance while operating with a lower environmental footprint,” said Eli Gruber, President and CEO, Ecologix Environmental Systems.

The IBR is capable of supporting the entire island by handling up to 2.65 million gallons of wastewater per day. By choosing the above-ground IBR system, development officials for the island were able to eliminate many of the civil work expenses that generally accompany the buildup of wastewater treatment infrastructure.

In-ground biological reactors – the types of systems often selected to treated wastewater in places like Russky Island – require multiple shallow, steel-reinforced concrete basins, fit with energy intensive aeration systems. Not only are these kinds of reactors expensive to build, they can also be costly to maintain and prohibitive in a delicate island ecosystem.

Ecologix’s IBR simplifies civil preparation of wastewater treatment infrastructure with its above ground configuration. The system, which can also be used in conjunction with industrial wastewater treatment applications, requires less energy, costs less to build and delivers greater savings in maintenance and operational costs.

At this new installation, it also provides an efficient method of cleaning Russky Island’s wastewater to the standard where it can be safely discharged into surface waterways. Additional treatment processes installed alongside the IBR make treated water safe for irrigation and limited reuse.
