Easily Moved Equipment On Track With Retrofit For Sludge Dewatering Building

Ft. Erie, ON The Public Works Department of the Regional Municipality of Niagara runs several advanced sludge-dewatering units within the Region. In one of their facilities, the ANDRITZ dewatering unit is located on the second floor of the building. It processes the liquid sludge to a point where the sludge is dropped through the floor to the next level, depositing it into a tractor trailer which then takes it to another facility for further processing.
When originally built, it was expected that this unit would be moved by crane down to a flatbed trailer and then driven to other locations in order to assist with the dewatering process. Although the unit had been designed to be portable and be removed from the building for these other operations at the different facilities, as well as the servicing of the internal components of this unit, the reality of the situation was that this unit had not been serviced since its installation several years earlier.
To rectify this situation and to ensure that there would be regular servicing of this unit, the Region investigated the cost and installation of a 5-tonne overhead crane in order to complete the long-overdue servicing of this dewatering unit. When the price tag was in excess of $100,000 for this crane, the Region came to Easily Moved Equipment Inc. for assistance.
Could we design a portable GANTRY Crane that could be assembled on site and not require any significant structural changes to the building?
eme's solution was a portable, aluminum 5-tonne GANTRY Crane with a 10-ft. (3.05 m) Beam, Beam Trolley, a 5-tonne manual hoist, as well as come-alongs. The GANTRY Crane is mounted on floor-mounted rails that run the entire length of the building; the come-alongs allow the staff to crank the GANTRY Crane along the rails, slowly extracting the heavy internal unit, moving it along to a cleaning area; then, repeat the process in order to return the internal unit to its proper place.
The GANTRY Crane was assembled on site in less than two hours by four people without the use of any rigging equipment or special installation tools. The total cost of the installation was $25,000, resulting in a whopping saving of 75 percent of the original estimate for the overhead crane!
