DOE Awards $2.2M Financial Assistance Grant To New Mexico Environmental Department Oversight Bureau
The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Environmental Management (EM) awarded a non-competitive financial assistance grant to the New Mexico Environmental Department Oversight Bureau today.
The bureau will conduct independent, confirmatory environmental monitoring at and around EM’s Waste Isolation Pilot Plant — including groundwater, surface water, soil, vegetation, air, and gamma radiation sampling — to verify protection of public health and the environment from transuranic waste operations.
The total estimated value of the grant is $2.2M with a budget period of three years from July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2029.
For more than 35 years, EM has remained focused on addressing the environmental legacy of nuclear weapons development and nuclear energy research that helped end World War II, win the Cold War and position the U.S. as a leader in nuclear energy. EM delivers results that are protecting the environment, supporting communities and enabling a concerted focus on safely completing the mission sooner and efficiently.
