DEYAK Water Utility Drives Technology Advancement For Water Systems In Greece

As part of Greece’s post-pandemic National Recovery and Resilience Plan, the government is prioritizing sustainable water and waste management alongside energy reform and digital modernization. Aligned with European Union directives requiring all member states to ensure access to safe, clean water—free from microplastics, harmful chemicals, and dangerous microorganisms—Greece faces a unique challenge: nearly 26% of public water is lost annually through infrastructure leaks, while Greek households consume more drinking water than any other EU country.
Spearheading reform is DEYAK, the water supply and sewerage company for Kozani, a city in Western Macedonia. Since 1985, DEYAK has expanded its water services to 63 settlements, steadily improving infrastructure and service quality. Now, with the support of partners ReonHydor and Tech-Go-Round, the utility is deploying advanced technologies to reduce water loss, optimize supply, and ensure reliability for the city’s 60,000 residents.
“Kozani presented an ideal opportunity to create a model system for other Greek utilities,” said Dimitris Papailiopoulos of Tech-Go-Round. Unlike larger systems that face significant logistical barriers, smaller authorities like DEYAK can adopt smart water technologies more rapidly, setting a valuable precedent for nationwide transformation.
