Desalination As A Solution To Drought To Be Discussed At IDA World Congress

ARCADIS Principal Environmental Engineer Brent Alspach will present “The Critical Role of Desalination in Pipe-to-Pipe Direct Potable Reuse” at the International Desalination Association (IDA) World Congress in San Diego next week. Co-authors include both John Balliew and Gilbert Trejo of El Paso Water Utilities, as well as Caroline Russell of ARCADIS.

The presentation will discuss potable reuse as a means of providing a locally controlled, drought-resistant water supply. The presentation will highlight the ongoing ARCADIS-designed El Paso Water Utilities’ (EPWU) direct potable reuse (DPR) pilot study, which is being conducted in support of the planned Advanced Water Purification Facility. This 10 million gallon per day full-scale facility, currently anticipated to be on-line in 2020, will be the second direct-to-distribution DPR facility in the world and the first to utilize desalination. If executed, this project would provide high quality drinking water to thousands of households in the El Paso area, even in times of drought. Not only does this technology have the capacity to solve water scarcity problems in El Paso, it could be used in other drought-stricken areas such as California, which is currently in its fourth year of drought.

Alspach’s presentation is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 3 as part of a series of morning sessions beginning at 8:45 a.m.

The IDA World Congress is the largest global event in the desalination and water reuse industry and will take place Aug. 30- Sept. 4, 2015.
