Case Study: Decentralized Wastewater Treatment - Nanoose First Nation WWTP, Nanoose Bay, BC

Initial phase of this advanced wastewater treatment plant serves Snaw-naw-as First Nation village at Nanoose Bay. The plant has been designed to be expanded in the future to serve neighbouring commercial and residential developments. Since the treated effluent is discharged into the very sensitive environment of Nanoose Bay, high quality effluent was stipulated: BOD, TSS and Total Nitrogen of less than respectively 10, 10 and 20 mg/l, ammonia nitrogen of less than 1 mg/l and fecal coliform of less than 14/100 ml. The system consists of fine mechanical drum screen, USBF sludge filters, sand filters and UV disinfection. It includes two bioreactor modules and a provision has been made for future modular expansion. Phase 1 of the plant was built in 2005 and started up on October 20, 2005.
