The CoLD® Process: Thermal Treatment Of Wastewater From Coal-Fired Generation

Source: Veolia Water Technologies

Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) and Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) processes result in large volumes of high-salinity wastewater that contain toxic and hazardous constituents.

Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) and Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) processes result in large volumes of high-salinity wastewater that contain toxic and hazardous constituents.

Conventional physical, chemical, and biological treatment methods may remove some of these constituents, but do not address the reduction of effluent volumes nor its salinity.

The CoLD™ Process: Unique Zero Liquid Discharge System for Treatment of Wastewater from Coal-Fired Generation

Evaporation and crystallization, a proven method of treating these wastewaters, have been used for over forty years in the power industry to achieve zero liquid discharge (ZLD).

HPD has applied proven process designs successfully utilized in the salt, fertilizer, and chemical industries into the development of the CoLD™ Process. The result is a simple and robust ZLD System to separate these wastewaters into clean water and a stable, non-hazardous solid for disposal and/or re-use.

The CoLD™ Process is a simple, cost-effective solution to Zero Liquid Discharge that provides the following benefits:

  • Achieves Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) on difficult coal-fired wastewaters
  • Lowest CAPEX and OPEX
  • No chemical pretreatment or sludge production
  • Produces clean water for reuse and stable solids for disposal
  • Simple, robust process with high reliability and availability
  • Operating experience in other industries
