Built to Weather Any Storm: One of the Largest Drainage Pumping Stations in the World

Following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, the Army Corps of Engineers took swift action to overhaul the long-stalled Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection System. As part of this urgent initiative, Pentair was commissioned to construct 11 massive pumps for installation along the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway south of New Orleans. Manufactured in Kansas City and delivered in May 2011, these pumps were more than just a product—they were a lifeline.
Pentair’s commitment extended far beyond delivery. Their engineers worked tirelessly on-site for 18 weeks, collaborating with contractors and the Army Corps of Engineers to ensure the pumps were fully operational. Today, Pentair continues to maintain and monitor the pumps, providing critical inspections, repairs, and preventive maintenance.
At the heart of this effort stands the $1 billion West Closure Complex, one of the largest surge barrier systems in the world. The pumps play a crucial role in safeguarding a quarter of a million people on the west bank of the Mississippi River. During Hurricane Ida in 2021, the system performed flawlessly, preventing catastrophic flooding that could have mirrored Katrina’s destruction. Pentair’s technology and dedication have transformed flood protection in Southeast Louisiana, proving indispensable in the fight against future storms.
