Water utility data can come from a range of sources, including sensors, meters, SCADA systems, and more. Each offers insights into activities and conditions throughout the water distribution network. Data serves the dual role of identification that drives actions. Identification involves recognizing patterns, anomalies, or potential issues within the network. This can include detecting changes in pressure or consumption, segmentation of customers — such as different types of businesses vs. residential customers — and gauging the impact of adverse weather and seasonal trends. Actions, on the other hand, are the proactive measures taken based upon the conditions identified, such as repair orders, consumer outreach, maintenance of assets, and more.

Each source of data provides valuable insights that can help utilities detect patterns, address issues, and respond effectively to network conditions. But with data increasing at an unprecedented rate, many utilities are struggling to effectively store, manage, and make sense of the data over time.
