Black & Veatch's Excellence In Engineering Recognized At Katrine

The Katrine Water Project has won the prestigious Saltire Society Award for Civil Engineering in 2008. Black & Veatch, a leading global engineering, consulting and construction company, was Scottish Water's main contractor on the project that provides drinking water for more than 700,000 people in and around Glasgow.

"Winning the Saltire Award is a fantastic achievement and was only possible due to the outstanding commitment and contribution of everyone who was involved in the project," said Tony Collins, Managing Director of Black & Veatch's UK water business. "Our client, the local community, our design partners and supply chain participants demonstrated great team work.

"The award publicly recognizes the added value that Black & Veatch can help create for clients such as Scottish Water."

Presented by the Saltire Society, in association with the Institution of Civil Engineers, the award citation "recognizes the significant achievement in planning, designing and constructing a state-of-the-art water treatment facility, which will ensure safe, high-quality water for the people of Glasgow and its surrounding area for generations to come."

Nominated for the award by The Baldernock Amenity Trust, a local conservation group concerned with social and environmental impacts on the community, the foundation of the Katrine Water Project's success has been attributed to the strong partnership between Scottish Water and Black & Veatch. The trust declared that Black & Veatch "maintained an outstanding safety record and ensured consideration was given to community aspirations of the local community."

The project was delivered two months ahead of schedule and £10 million under budget. The Baldernock Amenity Trust stated the works, designed by a Black & Veatch, Thames Water and MWH team, "achieves good environmental and economic performance, reducing the operation's carbon footprint."

The Katrine Water Project faced stiff competition from projects in many engineering disciplines across Scotland including road, rail and regeneration works. The Saltire Society aims to enhance the quality of Scotland's contribution to all the arts and sciences by encouraging creativity, inventiveness and the achievement of the highest standards of excellence in these fields.
