BioCOPE, Inc. Introduces Iron Salts And Organic Catalyst Combination For Odor, Corrosion, And Grease Control

Two of the best types of products for odor, corrosion, and grease control are BioCOPE's enzymatic product, which contains no bacteria or degreasers, and the various iron salts products. A drawback with using iron salts alone is that they require a high volume of product to be added to the system and require special handling. BioCOPE, Inc. has a process in which our organic catalyst product can be mixed with ferrous sulfate to create a mixture that can contain up to 5% ferrous sulfate in suspension. This combination can reduce the overall pounds of iron needed to treat a line by 60%-80%, while providing excellent sulfide removal with increased grease reduction and corrosion control. This new product is called ERI, which stands for EnRiched Iron.

Using ERI allows BioCOPE to reduce our overall cost to our customers. The higher dosage rate increases the amount of contact between the product and the substrate. ERI creates enough of an enzymatic reaction to control grease and change the slime layer in the pipe and lift station. The combination of the two products allows the iron salts to scavenge most sulfur gas byproducts, while the enzymatic product reduces the long-chain volatile fatty acids to shorter chain acids that are more easily taken up by the indigenous bacteria.

This combination can be injected in upstream lift stations for odor control miles down the line. In Houston, Texas, the odors were controlled in a 4.8 mile long 36" force main for one year. The effectiveness of the product was confirmed during two periods in which the ERI treatment was allowed to lapse while waiting for purchase order approval. When ERI was being added to the line, there were no complaints from a nearby apartment complex. During the periods when the dosage was stopped, complaints from the complex began within two days, and at one point, residents alerted a local television new organization to the problem.

ERI can provide these results with no ill effects. Other company's might claim they can achieve the same results, but some products might create grease coagulation or matting in lift stations, while other products could be considered hazardous. We know of no other products that can control both grease and odors caused by sulfides, sulfur byproducts, and volatile fatty acids.
