AWWA Announces Publication Of Updated Water Supply Operations Series
The American Water Works Association (AWWA) announced recently the publication of the updated fourth edition of the Principles and Practices of Water Supply Operations (WSO) training series.
Developed by AWWA in 1975 to provide professional, practical education to those entering the field of municipal drinking water treatment and supply, WSO is used worldwide by water utilities, vocational schools, colleges, universities, and military services.
The WSO training course consists of five textbooks designed to provide a complete education in all aspects of public water supply from source to tap:
Volume 1: Water Sources
Designed to teach student how water sources are developed for drinking water supply, wells are built and operated, and water taken from lakes and other surface water sources. Also covered are water usage; water conservation; source water management techniques; water rights doctrines; and principles of source water protection.
New in the fourth edition: Expanded coverage of source protection, water pollution issues, water use and conservation, sustainability, and water reuse.
Volume 2: Water Treatment
Designed to cover pretreatment, coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, clarification, and filtration processes and equipment. Also covered are the purposes, dosage calculations, and point of application for chemicals. Quality control, safety, and record keeping are covered, as are disinfection methods.
New in the fourth edition: New chapter on water treatment residuals; expanded coverage of membrane treatment, point of use treatment, and recycling.
Volume 3: Water Transmission and Distribution
Designed to teach the types of distribution system equipment and facilities that are available. Students will how to disinfect, install, operate, and maintain equipment in the field while preventing backflow and cross connections. Security systems and methods are also covered in detail.
New in the fourth edition: Two new chapters titled: "Hydraulics of Water Distribution Systems" and "System Security and Emergency Response"; expanded coverage of pumping stations.
Volume 4: Water Quality, Fourth Edition
Designed to teach the types of contaminants found in water that must be treated. Students will learn the equipment and methods of water quality laboratories, how water is monitored for both treatment efficiency and contaminants, sampling, and record keeping, and methods of investigating customer complaints.
New in the fourth edition: Explanations of current and future rules affecting drinking water systems, including the Long-Term 1 Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule, Long-Term 2, and the Ground Water Rule.
Volume 5: Basic Science Concepts and Applications
Designed to cover the many calculations necessary in water operations, including the basic concepts of each science, as well as concepts that relate specifically to water and water-system operations. The text provides hundreds of calculations, charts, and graphs used in water treatment and distribution, and for wells, storage, and many other aspects of water supply.
New in the fourth edition: New problems and examples that relate to current methods, equipment, and regulations.
