Aurora Water Has Two Of The Best Water Treatment Facilities In The Country

Aurora Water now has two of the ten best plants in the country after the Griswold Water Treatment Facility recently received the Phase IV "Excellence in Water Treatment" designation, assigned only to the top performing plants in the nation. The Wemlinger Water Treatment Facility received the same designation a few years ago, making Aurora Water the only water utility in the nation to have two top performing plants.

In order to receive the designation, staff had to pass a rigorous evaluation after undergoing three levels of review that required extensive documentation of a variety of components, including evidence of staff training and development, equipment testing and monthly water quality statistics. The evaluation was conducted through the American Water Works Association's Partnership for Safe Drinking Water program.

"For years, Aurora Water has been a leader in its industry, with some of the most advanced technology and qualified staff around," said Aurora City Manager George (Skip) Noe. "This most recent honor recognizes that, and it's an accomplishment for which we should all be very proud."

Partnership for Safe Drinking Water is a voluntary program that began in 1994 to encourage cities to increase their water quality and safety standards. The standards encourage cities to optimize treatment plant performance to increase protection against microbial contamination, which can create a public health risk.

Organizations involved in the program and assessment include the EPA, the Association of Metropolitan Water Agencies, the American Water Works Association, the National Association of Water Companies, the Association of State Drinking Water Administrators and the Water Research Foundation.
