Water and wastewater leaders are unsung heroes. Clean, safe water is essential to human life and to the well-being of the environment, yet it is grossly underfunded. Limited resources lead to deferred maintenance and difficult decisions. In ASCE’s 2017 Infrastructure Report Card, both water and wastewater received an overall “D” rating. Water and wastewater leaders across the globe identify their number one challenge to be coping with aging and decaying infrastructure. Utilities face the challenge of maintaining and expanding large-scale and widely dispersed assets. These assets fail at different rates, for different reasons, and with different consequences. Water and wastewater leaders are responsible for managing these risks.
