AnoxKaldnes Introduces LagoonGuard For Wastewater Treatment

Providence, RI — AnoxKaldnes, Inc. is proud to announce the creation of a new treatment process for wastewater nitrification in lagoons using their AnoxKaldnes Moving Bed® biofilm reactor (MBBR). The LagoonGuard™ as it is called, provides a cost-effective, simple way to upgrade your lagoon treatment system by retrofitting your existing lagoons.

Most recently LagoonGuard was installed into a city with ammonia limits and cold weather nitrification issues. New effluent discharge standards required the city to meet ammonia limits year round. The city operated a three cell treatment plant and the wastewater temperatures are low less than 7°C /45°F during winter making it impossible to nitrify on a consistent basis. The city could either abandon the existing system and build a new activated sludge plant at a very high cost or could use what they already had and install an AnoxKaldnes MBBR LagoonGuard process to meet the nitrification limits at a much lower cost. They chose LagoonGuard.

The basis of the LagoonGuard process is the thousands of polyethylene carrier elements that provide a home for a vast, highly active bacteria culture. These elements are kept in constant motion throughout the entire volume of the wastewater by our specially designed aeration system and sieves, resulting in uniform, highly effective treatment.

The LagoonGuard setup consists of two process flow trains of two reactors in series retrofitted from the existing lagoons. Influent wastewater to the city's WWTP flows into the first and second pond cells for BOD treatment and effluent from the second cell flows directly into the new LagoonGuard treatment tank. The two-stage system removes any BOD in the wastewater and nitrifies all of the ammonia contained in it. The LagoonGuard alternative requires minimal operator attention and minimal space. An activated sludge plant was estimated to cost 50% more than the MBBR system.
