AMWA Members Join Over 400 Stakeholders Supporting Water Infrastructure Funding

In early September, AMWA played a leading role in organizing a joint letter signed by over 400 stakeholder organizations, individual water systems, and other public and private sector officials requesting funding for critical water infrastructure programs in the Fiscal Year 2026 (FY26) appropriations bill. Over 20 AMWA utilities wrote individual letters to their Members of Congress, producing letters to 34 Representatives and 26 Senators. The joint letter was also signed by AMWA and 13 other national and regional organizations, whose members collectively reached out to their congressional representatives, displaying an overwhelming support for fully funding water infrastructure programs in the upcoming appropriations package.

The letter outlines broad-based, enthusiastic support for three of EPA’s most relied upon water infrastructure programs, the Drinking Water and Clean Water State Revolving Funds (SRF) and the Water Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act (WIFIA) program. The letter, addressed to the House Speaker and Minority Leader and the Senate Majority Leader and Minority Leader, details the economic importance of these programs, including cost-savings for communities and job creation. It also expresses how these programs support water systems’ ability to maintain affordable, clean water services.

In individual letters, AMWA members also expressed their support for various other important EPA funding programs, including the Reducing Lead in Drinking Water grant program and the Midsize and Large Drinking Water System Infrastructure Resilience and Sustainability Program. AMWA will continue to monitor the status of these programs in the appropriations package as Congress approaches the September 30th deadline to pass the funding bills and avert a government shutdown.
