Amagua C.E.M. Designs Solar-Powered Water Treatment And Distribution

Amagua C.E.M., the public utility serving La Puntilla Parish in the Samborondón district of Ecuador, is committed to delivering high-quality drinking water and wastewater management services. In addition to its core operations, Amagua offers preventive system management and consulting on network design, construction, and maintenance. Seeking greater operational efficiency and reliability, the company launched an ambitious project to create an integrated system for water capture, transport, and treatment.
“To have operational autonomy, we determined the need for an integrated collection, conduction, and treatment system that allows it to supply a complete flow of 880 liters per second,” explained Leonidas Dávila, project director at Amagua.
The project is being implemented in two phases, each providing 440 liters per second of treated water. It includes the development of a water catchment system, transmission pipeline, and treatment facility. In a move toward long-term sustainability, Amagua incorporated solar panels to power surface pumps that transport raw water to distribution tanks—significantly reducing the system’s dependence on conventional energy sources and cutting its carbon footprint.
This initiative marks a major step forward in building a resilient and environmentally responsible water infrastructure.
