Central to the conversation were the topics of innovation, collaboration, and leadership within the context of the challenges faced by the U.S. water industry. Among these issues: rebuilding and replacing aging infrastructure, advancing clean water initiatives, and making progress with water reuse.

Recently on UN World Water Day, the UN launched Clean Water Here, an initiative dedicated to educating the public about the need for safe drinking water globally. The effort emphasizes the tough realities faced by the water sector, from aging and leaky infrastructure to treatment facilities ill-equipped to protect people — especially the poor and most vulnerable — from 21st-century contaminants.

As water organizations in the U.S. and beyond gear up to find new ways to deal with water scarcity, my colleagues and I are increasingly asked what we’ve learned working with water corporations in Australia. The first thing that comes to mind: Deal with water issues before scarcity arises.
