World-Renowned Kansas City Companies Team For Water Services Project

Kansas City, MO — Black & Veatch and Burns & McDonnell, both global engineering and consulting companies with world headquarters based in Kansas City, Missouri, have announced their intention to jointly pursue upcoming program management opportunities within the City of Kansas City's Water Services Department.

The City of Kansas City, Missouri, recently issued a Request for Qualifications to provide Extension of Staff Services for Water/Sewer Capital/Maintenance Projects. The city seeks to hire a company to provide experienced program management services to assist the Water Services Department in managing a complex set of capital projects associated with two $250 million bond initiatives previously approved by voters. Included in the scope is a broad range of capital and maintenance-related projects to improve service delivery, minimize flooding and open areas of the city to future development.

"While well known for our reputation for design excellence, we have a lot to offer the city on this engagement," said Dan McCarthy, President & CEO of Black & Veatch's global water business. "This program will require the ability to develop cost effective and innovative solutions to address the complex challenges the city faces, and we believe that our design expertise positions us to effectively manage the program."

The partnering of Black & Veatch and Burns & McDonnell forms a hometown team of experts with world-class experience and more than 200 combined years of service in Kansas City. Both companies serve leading roles in the global market specializing in engineering, consulting and construction services. Work performed by both companies has made a substantial mark on the Kansas City area in recent years with a portfolio of projects that includes program management services for the Kansas City International Airport's Terminal Improvement Project, new downtown Sprint Arena, Capital Improvements Management Office, Truman Sports Complex Renovation Project, downtown entertainment district, Lake Lenexa stormwater management and recreation project, as well as projects for the Kansas City Board of Public Utilities, Johnson County Wastewater and WaterOne.

"The improvements made to this city's infrastructure in recent years - the airport, downtown, neighborhoods - make us grateful for the opportunity to lend our international expertise right here at home," said Greg Graves, CEO of Burns & McDonnell. "We are excited about the opportunity this unprecedented partnership of homegrown, world-class companies presents in continuing our role in making Kansas City an even better place. It doesn't get much better than this."

Black & Veatch's McCarthy added, "As two highly recognized companies who have the experience and professional depth needed on a project of this magnitude, we bring together a strong and capable local workforce with a sense of civic pride that is phenomenal."

These two companies, along with key partners from local minority and women-owned businesses, form a team of experts comprised solely of Kansas City firms. Through its core team members and other significant locally owned businesses, Black & Veatch and Burns & McDonnell expect to substantially exceed the city's minority business enterprise (MBE) and women's business enterprise (WBE) hiring goals. Key partners include Astra Communications, DuBois Consultants, K.C. Consulting, and Talliferro & Brown Engineering in addition to a variety of local MBE/WBE businesses.

"The decision to be on a team of this caliber was simple, considering the opportunity it presents for the growth of the local MBE/WBE community," said Ajamu Webster, President of DuBois Consultants, Inc. "We are pleased with the opportunity this partnership will afford companies like ours to serve meaningful roles and build capacity within our own firms, while meeting the city's needs."
