Purifics To Clean Up 1,4 Dioxane At Superfund Site

London, Ontario, Canada– Purifics ES Inc., ("Purifics") has been awarded a contract for its PHOTO-CAT® technology to clean up groundwater contaminated with 1,4-dioxane and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) at the W.R. Grace Superfund Site (the "Site") in Concord, Massachusetts.

Considered innovative technology by some in the remediation industry, the PHOTO-CAT® system that will be used at the Site has been successfully employed on Superfund sites since 1994. The PHOTO-CAT® solution was selected because "it is a once-through process that treats all organic contaminants of concern, saving us operating cost and time" stated David Fuerst of O&M, Inc. project manager for the Site.

PHOTO-CAT® is a photocatalytic, ceramic membrane process that combines the best of chemical-free advanced oxidation processes (AOP+®) and high flux ceramic ultrafiltration. The advantages of Purifics' PHOTO-CAT® system are that it is chemical free (no peroxide or ozone), fully automated (no operator required) and will treat contaminants of concern to levels below the detection limit (3ppb). Another advantage is that there are no air emissions, eliminating the need for air permits.

The PHOTO-CAT® system will be shipped in late December and will be fully operational by May 2011, replacing an existing air stripper that is ineffective at removing 1,4-dioxane.
