Pasteurization Technology Group Customer, Ventura Water, Receives Award From The California WateReuse Association

"Recycled Water Agency of the Year" award recognizes PTG's reclaimed water pasteurization and energy recovery process as a new technology that significantly advances water recycling in California

San Leandro, CA /PRNewswire/ - Pasteurization Technology Group (PTG), innovator of the only wastewater disinfection process that generates renewable energy, is pleased to announce that Ventura Water has been honored as a leader in the water reuse and desalination industry during the 2013 WateReuse California Annual Conference held in Monterey, California. Ventura Water received the water recycling "Recycled Water Agency of the Year Medium" award for their use of PTG's breakthrough technology. Ventura Water Wastewater Utility Manager Dan Pfeifer and Andrew Salveson , water reuse chief technologist of Carollo Engineers, accepted the award.

The WateReuse Association, California Section is the premier statewide organization devoted to sustaining supplies through water recycling and desalination. Its mission is to promote responsible stewardship of California's water resources by maximizing the safe, practical and beneficial use of recycled water. The Annual WateReuse Awards provide industry recognition for successful projects, products, and individuals that have made significant contributions to advancing water reuse or desalination. The awards typically recognize projects that advance sustainable sources of water or offer a novel approach to meeting local water needs.

Ventura Water is pioneering eco-friendly wastewater disinfection on California's central coast

Ventura Water successfully completed the initial evaluation phase of a landmark project to transition its wastewater treatment plant to a safe, non-toxic, sustainable technology, and thereby replace the current chlorine-based disinfection process in use at the Ventura Wastewater Reclamation Facility. Current estimates are that PTG's technology will enable the City of Ventura to realize energy and operating cost savings of more than $750,000 per year.

Ventura Water initiated the project to eliminate hazardous chemicals and attain greater efficiency and sustainability. Ventura Water managers and engineers, as part of their continuous efforts to lower costs and improve the environment, identified PTG's technology as a potential solution, and developed a set of criteria to evaluate new technology to replace the city's existing wastewater disinfection process.

PTG's technology was identified as the lowest-cost alternative in a study led by Carollo Engineers, experts in wastewater engineering. This study resulted in the decision to install a PTG evaluation unit, which is currently processing over 500,000 gallons of wastewater per day, and offers the potential to scale up to 20 million gallons of wastewater per day. Since December 2011, the evaluation unit has been undergoing extensive tests to prove that it meets the Ventura Water Reclamation Facility's stringent standards for water safety while offering the potential to reduce the facility's operating costs.

"We're thrilled and encouraged to see Ventura Water receive well-deserved recognition for this innovative project," said Greg Ryan , co-founder and CEO of Pasteurization Technology Group. "The PTG system has been processing more than 15 million gallons per month during this initial testing phase and has met or exceeded all the goals set. We look forward to the next phase of the process, which will validate that PTG's technology can significantly reduce operating costs while transitioning Ventura Water to a chemical-free approach to wastewater disinfection."

The PTG eco-friendly system for wastewater disinfection and renewable energy

PTG's patented technology is the first and only technology to combine wastewater disinfection with the generation of renewable energy. PTG's integrated systems can use available waste by-products (like biogas or biomass) or natural gas to power a turbine or engine that generates electricity. The turbine's hot exhaust air (which is typically wasted) is passed through a waste-heat recovery unit that increases the temperature to disinfect the wastewater. PTG's intelligent software optimizes energy and flows efficiently throughout the integrated system. PTG's systems are significantly more cost-effective and energy-efficient than other methods. And, unlike other wastewater disinfection approaches, PTG's technology is sustainable and does not require toxic chemicals such as chlorine, or costly electrical power, and expensive UV lamps. As a result, PTG's systems fit a broad range of applications in both the municipal and industrial market sectors.

About Pasteurization Technology Group

California-based Pasteurization Technology Group (PTG) is a rapidly growing, VC-backed company that is revolutionizing the disinfection of wastewater. PTG's systems feature its patented "two-for-one" technology that combines eco-friendly wastewater disinfection with the generation of renewable energy. PTG's process is one of only a handful of technologies to pass the stringent standards of Title 22 in the state of California for the disinfection of water for reuse. PTG's technology has also been officially recognized in the EPA's influential Guidelines for Water Reuse. By channeling the typically wasted exhaust heat from a turbine or engine to disinfect wastewater, PTG's process is able to deliver the most energy-efficient and lowest-cost solution on the market. PTG has won numerous awards including the Katerva Award, the Artemis Top 50 Water Tech award, and the Popular Science "Best of What's New" award.
