Agua Nueva Earns Industry Excellence Awards

Agua Nueva is one of the world’s most advanced water reclamation facilities

Pima County Regional Wastewater Reclamation Department’s (RWRD) Agua Nueva Water Reclamation Facility (ANWRF) has been selected by Engineering News-Record (ENR) as the recipient of the “ENR Southwest 2014 Best Projects Award” in the Water/Environment category. ENR’s Southwest Best Projects Award recognize the top projects in Arizona, Nevada, and New Mexico. The project also recently won the American Council of Engineering Companies of Arizona’s(ACEC AZ) Engineering Excellence Grand Award, qualifying the project for the ACEC national excellence award, and the 2014 Clifford Sawyer Achievement Award, which is a tribute to excellence in communication and promotion of engineering achievements.

The ANWRF, part of Pima County’s largest capital improvements program, is one of the world’s most advanced water reclamation facilities. The 32 MGD, $172M facility produces high quality effluent that exceeds expectations, keeping the Santa Cruz River clean and protecting Pima County’s reclaimed water system. CH2M HILL, as the single-entity Design-Build-Operate (DBO) firm, was responsible for project delivery and construction, and will operate and maintain the plant for 15+5 years.

“Agua Nueva has been recognized with numerous industry awards in 2014, and we are honored to add the ENR and ACEC regional awards to that list of distinctions,” said Greg Fischer, CH2M HILL Vice President and Design-Build Global Service Delivery Leader. “The ANWRF project is a prime example of how we worked collaboratively with Pima County RWRD to incorporate best practices and processes, successfully implementing this project.”

Beyond the most recent ENR and ACEC regional awards, ANWRF has earned significant industry recognition, including three Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) awards for Excellence in Process, National Award of Excellence, and a National Award of Merit. It also received the Grand Prize in Design by the American Academy of Environmental Engineers & Scientists, as well as two statewide 2014 Project of the Year Awards from the Arizona Chapter of the American Public Works Association.

Winners of the 2014 ENR Best Projects Awards will be honored at an event in Phoenix on November 14, 2014. Receiving regional project awards qualifies recipients for consideration of ENR’s Best of the Best Projects 2014 Awards, to be announced later this year.

Pima County RWRD also received recognition with a Merit Award in the Water/Environment category for its Tres Rios Water Reclamation Facility, in which CH2M HILL served as the lead design firm.
