Most commercially available in situ pH sensors used for water quality monitoring are ion-selective electrodes that are highly sensitive to slight changes in the signal impedance. This makes the sensors susceptible to drift and slower to respond when deployed in cold or low ionic strength (LIS) water or when used with older equipment that has even small amounts of wear or contamination in the electrical connections.

YSI's new in situ pH sensor, the 6589FR (Fast Response), improves field performance significantly, even under the most challenging conditions. The new sensor offers faster response time, low drift, and a longer sensor life. The 6589FR is also insensitive to contamination, moisture, and aging of sensor connectors, allowing users to lengthen the life of YSI sonde platforms.

For example, a federal monitoring agency has reduced its response time for pH readings in cold, LIS rivers from 10-15 minutes to less than 2 minutes per reading by using the 6589FR pH sensor. The main cause of the slow response time was older sondes with worn and contaminated connectors, increasing the signal impedance. Switching to the new pH sensor allowed the agency to collect the data it needed more quickly and affordably.

The amplified 6589FR pH sensor contains signal conditioning electronics and its own power supply. This design is backwards compatible with every YSI 6-Series sonde with a field-replaceable pH sensor. The sensor carries a one-year warranty, plus, the sensor's power supply has a calculated battery life of two years.
