What Is Intelligent Flushing?

With water conservation being mandated in California and the public slowly waking up to the value of treated water, line flushing can seem to the uninitiated like an unnecessary waste.

As Robert Galvin, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Kupferle, explains in this Water Online Radio interview, intelligent flushing incorporates a chlorine analyzer with a PLC to allow the authority to sample the water quality and flush the exact amount of water to keep it within pre-determined quality parameters at the same time.

“As a superintendent of a distribution system or water chlorine manager, I can actually program where I want my residual levels to be, a minimum level that’s say 0.6 ppm and maybe a desired level of 0.9,” said Galvin. “I schedule sampling time so that the device actually samples the water, sees what the chlorine residual level is and then flushes the exact amount of water for water conservation to keep my water within the certain safe parameters that I prescribe.”

Kupferle’s new device called Genesis can also transmit to a SCADA system and perform analysis over time to see how chlorine fluctuates with seasonal temperature variations and other dynamics effecting water quality.
