Ostara Wins ‘Water's Next Wastewater Award'; Award Recognized Pearl Technology As Driving Innovation In Resource Recovery

Ostara Nutrient Recovery Technologies sets the standard for resource recovery, transforming nutrients in wastewater into a high-value, eco-friendly phosphorus fertilizer for highest beneficial reuse

Ostara Nutrient Recovery Technologies Inc., has been chosen as the recipient of the Water’s Next Wastewater Award, recognizing their proprietary Pearl process – an innovative technology that sustainably recovers nutrients from wastewater streams and turns them into a high-value phosphorus fertilizer sold as Crystal Green. The Water’s Next national awards program honours the achievements and ideas of individuals and companies that successfully work to change water in Canada. Award winners were announced at the Water’s Next Awards Gala on June 23rd in Toronto as part of the Canadian Water Summit.

“It is an honour to be named among our peers as a leader in this industry,” said Phillip Abrary, Ostara’s president and CEO. “Ostara is proud to offer our nutrient recovery solution as a powerful tool in helping utilities of the future, and the industry as a whole, make a shift from wastewater treatment to resource recovery.”

Ostara’s Pearl process for nutrient recovery, is based on a closed-loop solution where 85% of the phosphorus and up to 15% of the nitrogen in liquid wastewater streams are recovered to form a high value fertilizer that generates revenues for wastewater treatment facilities, while helping meet environmental regulations. The result is the first 99.6% pure, ready-to-use granular fertilizer to be made from a recovered source. This fertilizer is composed of phosphorus, nitrogen and magnesium (5-28-0-10Mg), and is sold and marketed by Ostara through a global network of blenders and distributors to professionals in the turf, horticultural and agriculture sectors. Its unique Root-Activated mode of action improves crop yields, enhances turf performance and significantly reduces leaching and minimizes runoff, further protecting local waterways from nutrient pollution in a win-win solution for the water industry.

This award is chosen by an independent selection committee of 15 industry experts. To qualify for nomination, technologies must demonstrate efficient management and treatment of municipal and industrial wastewater, stormwater, and runoff from industry and agriculture, or effective resource recovery. Water’s Next winners in the Technologies category have proven solutions that have environmental benefits coupled with economic benefits that achieve client savings.

In the water industry today, Canadian companies, like Ostara, are driving innovation, developing new technologies that proactively respond to environmental challenges, legislation, regulation and beyond, shaping the landscape and the future of the water industry.

About Ostara & Crystal Green
Ostara helps protect precious water resources by changing the way cities around the world manage nutrients in wastewater streams. The company’s Pearl technology recovers phosphorus and nitrogen at municipal and industrial wastewater treatment plants and transforms them into a high-value, eco-friendly fertilizer, Crystal Green. The process greatly reduces nutrient management costs and helps plants meet increasingly stringent discharge limits while improving operating reliability. Crystal Green is the first continuous release granular fertilizer to provide Root-Activated phosphorus, nitrogen and magnesium (5-28-0-10Mg), and is marketed through a global network of blenders and distributors to growers in the turf, horticultural and agriculture sectors. Its unique Root-Activated mode of action improves crop yields, enhances turf performance and significantly reduces the risk of leaching and runoff, thus protecting local waterways from nutrient pollution. Ostara operates multiple facilities throughout North America and Europe and opened the world’s largest nutrient recovery facility in partnership with the City of Chicago in Spring 2016.
