Bion Seeking USDA-PVP Sustainable Brand

Bion Environmental Technologies, a pioneering innovator in livestock waste technology, will seek a sustainable brand certification through the USDA Process Verified Program (PVP) as a way to demonstrate its commitment to protect the environment, conserve water, reduce carbon footprint and improve food safety.

Similar to the “Responsibly Grown” produce rating system recently initiated by Whole Foods, the Bion sustainable brand certification will enable producers adopting Bion’s groundbreaking technology to distinguish their products in the marketplace as a source of safe and sustainable livestock proteins. Following approval by the USDA, producers implementing Bion’s technology will be licensed by Bion to use its approved Process Verified Program (PVP) certification on their products.

In addition to Whole Foods, Bion is joined in its commitment to improve sustainability by major food retailers such as Walmart, Costco and McDonalds and producers, including JBS and Cargill.

Bion Communications Director Craig Scott said the need to address the issue of food safety and sustainability is worldwide.

“Sustainable branding provides the consumer with the information to make informed choices and enables producers committed to environmental sustainability to differentiate themselves in the marketplace,” he said.

Bion’s technology platform brings new standards of environmental stewardship to the production of meat, poultry and dairy products, including substantial improvements in air, soil and water quality. Bion intends to secure a sustainable brand that can be applied to both the livestock protein products (beef, pork, dairy) produced on farms that have implemented Bion’s technology, as well as the by-products refined in the process, such as organic fertilizer and soil amendments.

For consumers, a click on a barcode on product packaging will allow smartphone users access to a database describing product origin, facility location and the environmental standards the facility operates under. This includes livestock waste treatment technology in use, its benefits to the environment and other information. Bion’s sustainability claims will be verified by individual state regulatory agencies as part of their certification of the technology’s verified nutrient reduction credits.

“The objective of Bion’s sustainable brand is to convey the overall holistic value that the sustainable certified product provides to both the consumer and the environment,” Scott said. “Over time it will be expanded. For example, California consumers interested in the gallons of water required to produce the product would have a comparison to the industry standard.”

Bion's proven and patented technology platform provides verifiable comprehensive environmental treatment of livestock waste and recovers clean water, renewable energy and valuable nutrients from the waste stream.
