A New Way To Nitrify

A New Way To Nitrify

Michael Faeth of Brentwood Industries reveals details about a new submerged fixed-film system for biological wastewater treatment.

You may know Brentwood Industries for their trickling filter media, being that the company has over 500 installations worldwide in the past 25 years. But Brentwood makes many different types of media for different applications. “We can custom tailor it to different loading levels for nitrification, for BOD removal – whatever the client needs,” Faeth tells Water Online Radio.

One of the more exciting developments at the company is the AccuFAS submerged fixed-film system, which Faeth explains:

“We use the same type of media that we’ve been making for the 25 years or so, but it’s submerged in an aeration tank. The primary function of it is to provide a surface for nitrifying bacteria to grow on, and enhanced nitrification in wastewater systems.

“We can use it in existing aeration basins and any activated sludge plant upgrade, new construction. We’ve done some lagoon enhancements for tertiary nitrification, following a lagoon system with it. It’s a very flexible system. We can configure it to fit most aeration tanks, and do a lot of different things.”
