Electromagnetic flowmeters (also called “magmeters”) have been used for a long time – more than 50 years – in the waste water industry as they offer distinct advantages over many other flow measurement technologies. First, the meter design is characterized by a full bore cross-section which means there is no pressure loss across the meter, which is of importance in applications with gravity feed. Secondly the magmeters offer a high accuracy – up to 0.2% - and are available in a wide range of nominal diameters – up to 78” and larger depending on manufacturer.

There are no moving parts and therefore they cannot become clogged. In many applications they can be considered to be maintenance free.

Electromagnetic flowmeters could be challenged by the thick slurries common in some waste water plant. The latest developments in electromagnetic flowmeter technology made it now possible to design magmeters that can deal with highly concentrated and thick sludge and sewage and provide a maximum measuring efficiency even in applications with inhomogeneous media.
