Decaying cyanobacteria ("algae") blooms in your source water can produce MIB, geosmin, and other T&O-causing compounds that lead to earthy, musty, grassy, fishy and other tastes and odors in drinking water. These same cyanobacteria can also produce toxins that are known to cause chronic and/or acute health effects in humans and animals.

There is a growing awareness of undesirable chemical contaminants in the world's water supply. Recent research has shown that a wide variety of potentially harmful chemicals exist at trace concentrations in streams, lakes, rivers, and groundwater throughout the world.

The TrojanUVSwift™ECT treats the compounds responsible for taste and odor while simultaneously disinfecting chlorine-resistant microbiological pathogens. While the disinfection benefits of UV are well known, Trojan's UV-oxidation process is also a highly cost-effective treatment technology for treating taste and odor (T&O) resulting from algae blooms. A UV-oxidation system, therefore, provides dual benefits of disinfection and T&O treatment in a single, compact unit process. Please visit the links above for additional information.

Key Benefits of Trojan UV-Oxidation for T&O and Disinfection:

  • Cost-Effective for municipal applications
  • Proven treatment of T&O-causing compounds
  • Performance guaranteed
  • Designed for complete elimination of your T&O problem
  • Fully-validated UV disinfection meets LT2 requirements
  • Odor control

The TrojanUVSwift™ECT is:

  • The most compact UV reactor available
  • Capable of treating hundreds of millions of gallons per day
  • Available in a variety of power capacities (i.e. number of lamps)
  • Designed for hydraulic efficiency using computational fluid dynamics
  • All wetted surfaces constructed of NSF-listed materials
  • Integrated (via control algorithms) with the H2O2 delivery system
  • Equipped with a control algorithm to minimize electrical consumption by dimming lamps while still maintaining performance
  • Available with Acticlean™, a chemical/mechanical wiper mechanism for maximization of quartz sleeve transmittance

More about Trojan's Environmental Contaminant Treatment (ECT) Capabilities:

There is a growing awareness of undesirable chemical contaminants in the world's water supply. Recent research has shown that a wide variety of potentially harmful chemicals exist at trace concentrations in streams, lakes, rivers, and groundwater throughout the world. In addition, consumers generally associate poor aesthetic quality of water (its taste and smell) with the presence of harmful compounds. For this reason, drinking water professionals are placing increasing emphasis on the treatment of taste and odor-causing compounds that impact the aesthetic quality of water. There is also a growing desire to remove chemical contaminants from wastewater intended for reuse (for irrigation or augmentation of drinking water supplies). To address these needs, Trojan's UV-oxidation solutions provide a powerful barrier to chemical contaminants in water while simultaneously disinfecting.

Trojan has led the revolution in the use of UV light and hydrogen peroxide for the treatment of contaminants in water. In fact, we were the first to implement large-scale, monochromatic lamp-based UV systems for the treatment of N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), dramatically reducing energy consumption in NDMA treatment. Trojan is demonstrating that UV light (either alone or in conjunction with hydrogen peroxide) acts as a barrier to potentially harmful chemical contaminants while simultaneously disinfecting.

A Growing List of Environmental Contaminants:

  • NDMA
  • Taste and Odor-causing Compounds (MIB and geosmin)
  • Pesticides and Herbicides
  • 1,4-Dioxane
  • Fuel and Fuel Additives (such as MTBE, hydrazine, and BTEX)
  • Volatile Organic Compounds (such as PCE, TCE and Vinyl Chloride)
  • Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products (PPCPs)
  • Endocrine Disruptor Chemicals

TrojanUV Solutions for ECT

For the treatment of these contaminants and others, Trojan offers two different UV solutions. For municipal applications treating taste and odor-causing chemicals and other emerging contaminants in drinking water, choose the TrojanUVSwift™ECT. For water reuse, drinking water, and groundwater remediation, choose the TrojanUVPhox™. Both are available with integrated hydrogen peroxide delivery systems and full-service support to provide you with a complete ECT solution.
