Sterilization
Among the steps taken in such a maintenance program - and perhaps the most critical - is the overall sanitization of the system. System sanitization ensures that contamination in the form of viable organisms is limited to a controllable and acceptable level and it ultimately proves to be a cost-saving measure as well.
DI water systems use membrane filters to remove both viable and non-viable contamination. However, without the proper filtration maintenance controls in place, filters alone cannot be relied upon to control bacterial contamination in the final product. This is because the filtration system can itself be a source of further contamination (a haven for bacteria), a problem which could raise production costs.
The reason for this is simple. Once an organism is trapped by a filter, it has the potential to propagate and, in time, possibly "grow through" the porous structure of the filter media. It then becomes a source for contamination downstream, threatening the integrity of the final product and possibly causing production delays. Fortunately, when a system undergoes proper sanitization procedures, the "grow through" problem is eliminated. This ensures the purity of the water and it lowers the load on the final filter which extends the life of the filter and provides greater economy.
