The City of Cape Town proudly invites you to the inaugural W12 Congress, an international congress and expo on water scarcity that will create the world's first "Major City Best Practices Water Protocol." With this protocol, participating cities will guide approaches to water management at the city level for decades to come. The Congress will bring together officials, water experts, business executives, academics, and students from major cities facing escalating water shortages. • This is the first water congress focused on the leadership role of cities. • Cape Town faced a “Day Zero” water scenario, and many other cities are likely to face a similar threat. Although water management occurs at varying levels of government, city officials in particular face extreme water related stress and decisions, which are only likely to increase. City officials need support and a global network to help them navigate these challenges to protect their populations. • The first step in developing city responses based on global best practice is the inaugural W12 Congress. Together, cities will create the world’s first “Major City Best Practice Water Protocol” a resource for addressing immediate water challenges and as well as making long-term strategic plans.• Former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger will join city leaders from around the world to address assembled experts, leaders, students, and other members of the public.• Each participating city will have the opportunity to present its case and ongoing water efforts to the media and assembled guests alongside keynote speakers and other city leaders.• City delegations will include experts from multiple sectors related to water security and will benefit from learning in detail what others are doing. • Global cities facing water related stressors were selected to participate.
