Yorkshire Water Uses TrojanUV Stormwater Disinfection System To Attain ‘Excellent' Bathing Standard

TrojanUV has supplied their TrojanUV4000Plus™ UV disinfection system to Yorkshire Water Services of the UK. The system will treat stormwater (peak flow 19 MGD - 850 L/s) at Scarborough Wastewater Treatment Works (WwTW) as part of an overall project to comply with the EU’s revised Bathing Water Directive (rBWD).

The rBWD was developed to protect the public from contaminants in bathing water and requires that all beaches meet the rBWD’s ‘Sufficient’ standard by 2015. Yorkshire Water, however, is investing to play its part in attaining the higher ‘Excellent’ standard as a member of the multi-agency Yorkshire Bathing Water Partnership. The Excellent standard is the prerequisite for beaches to be considered for the prestigious Blue Flag award.

“After stormwater is disinfected by the TrojanUV4000Plus, Yorkshire Water can discharge directly into the ocean, without concern of bacterial contamination for bathers,” explains TrojanUV’s Market Manager, Wayne Lem. “Our system will play a big part in helping improve Scarborough's bathing water under the rBWD, so the Yorkshire area can continue to offer some of the safest and cleanest beaches in Europe and have the best chance of proudly flying the Blue Flag award.”

TrojanUV was selected by contractor Morgan Sindall Grontmij through a competitive bid awarded December 20th, 2012. The project is on budget and on track to meet their compliance date in April 2014.

Key factors in the selection process include:

  • Small physical footprint. Scarborough WwTW is located on land owned by the Queen, so having this system use only 524 ft2(48.7 m2) of land was a heavily weighted factor.
  • Achieving bacteria and virus disinfection requirements with very low stormwater effluent quality. An independent third-party validation for the TrojanUV4000Plus design at very low water qualities (as low as 11% UV transmittance) was included as part of the selection criteria.
  • Achieving electricity requirements. Scarborough WwTW has limited power capacity available, so the dose pacing capabilities of the TrojanUV4000Plus will help minimize power consumption. Lamp output can vary from 100% down to 30% depending on flow rate and effluent quality.
  • Customer references. TrojanUV has other successful stormwater treatment systems installed that were used to demonstrate performance, as part of the selection criteria.
