Xylem Inc., a leading global water technology company focused on addressing the world’s most challenging water issues, has engineered a new water filtration technology to replace support gravel in the wastewater and porous plates in drinking water markets. The new Leopold I.M.S 1000 media retainer and I.M.S 200 media retainer allows wastewater and water treatment plants to consistently deliver higher quality effluent than with support gravel due to increased media depth and available driving head. The new Leopold I.M.S media retainers also cost less to install.

Rob Laird, General Manager of the Leopold brand said, “The I.M.S media retainers are an exciting addition to the market.  When coupled with Leopold Type S or Type S LUnderdrain, they provide superior air and water distribution over porous plates or gravel.”

The I.M.S 1000 model is suitable for use in wastewater plants; in GAC contactors, in biologically active filters and in the construction of filters for denitrification. The I.M.S 200 is suitable in drinking water plants and desalination plants.

Laird continued, “The Leopold I.M.S media retainers are a more effective solution for a number of reasons. Xylem’s precision engineering ensures a highly uniform distribution of air and water during the backwashing process which thoroughly cleans the media after each filtration process. A more flexible filter design allows for increased media freeboard and available media expansion resulting in a higher quality backwash. The rigid structure reduces the threat of bio-fouling* and there is no risk of gravel migration. Whether retrofitting into an existing filter or designing a new system, the Leopold I.M.S media retainer costs less than alternative systems to install and maintain.”

The new Leopold I.M.S media retainers will be unveiled at the AWWA show in June.
