Water Environment Research Foundation Awards Contract To Evaluate Heat Recovery From Wastewater

The Water Environment Research Foundation has awarded Drexel University with a contract to evaluate the state of heat recovery from wastewater. This project will examine the extent of heat’s use, the performance of available technologies, and regulatory issues that could impact heat recovery potential.

By focusing on water resource recovery facilities serving the public, the research team for State of the Science and Issues Related to Heat Recovery from Wastewater (ENER10C13) will ultimately provide:

1. Theoretical models to help guide utilities to develop heat recovery projects.
2. A discussion of fiscal considerations and a map to illustrate how triple bottom line considerations may be included in utility decision making.
3. An explanation of the potential connection between energy source and energy use while utilizing the appropriate geothermal technology.
4. A technology evaluation of wastewater geothermal systems.

The research team will also collaborate with the Philadelphia Water Department and the New York Department of Environmental Protection on this project.
