Adam Festger, Market Manager, Drinking Water and Environmental Contaminant Treatment for TrojanUV, highlights some of advances in UV technology over the last few years including UV groundwater treatment, UV chemical contamination treatment and UV lamp efficiency.

Water Online Radio: What did you take away from this year’s ACE?
Adam: I think there's a lot of interesting things going on in UV. One of the most interesting is how the industry has shifted to address the needs of the groundwater rule. That's a US EPA regulation from 2006, and when that first was introduced, UV was not really a part of it.
We didn't have the technology. We didn't have the understanding to demonstrate that UV was good at treating viruses. But now, my colleagues and I, we've figured out how to do this. The validators in UV have got methodologies.
The regulators have started to get a hold of it. Now that gives small communities a new tool to address viruses. That has always traditionally been done with chemicals, adding chlorine, but now we can do it with UV.
That's one of the things I took away from ACE, and we were talking about our Get Genuine, which is using genuine Trojan parts in lamps, in particular, in our systems. One of the things we have done is commissioned some independent testing to look at imitation lamps, and we've found that some of those lamps have just 50 percent of the output of a genuine Trojan lamp.
We're talking about that, and it's something certainly to think about, when people are looking at replacement parts for their system.
Water Online Radio: When we've had had you on this show in the past, Adam, you were giving us a solid briefing on a bunch of projects that you guys are working on, this idea of turning wastewater into drinking water. These are global projects. Give us an update on how those things are coming along.
Adam: For me, personally, I live in Tucson, Arizona, and it doesn't rain there a lot. The concept of reusing water is really on our minds and more so around the world. Projects are getting going, and they have been running for a number of years now, in a lot of cases, where we're working with secondary treated wastewater.
We take that water through an additional advanced treatment plant. Often, we use micro-filtration, reverse osmosis. Most people are familiar with RO, and then we use our UV technology, as the final step to make sure that everything is removed from that water, so it's completely safe to drink.
I think a notable update in this realm, in this sphere, is that people are definitely becoming more accepting of this concept. I mean, nobody likes the idea of drinking sewage water, but we have demonstrated with technology, over the past few years, that we can do this and we can do it safety.
The volumes of data now that have been generated by the Orange County Water District, the West Basin Water Recycling Facility, and WRD's Leo J. Vander Lans facility, in Long Beach, CA. These facilities have been running for a while, and they've produced really, really high quality water for a while…
