Teijin To Partner With PUB Singapore To Further Develop Technologies For Uses In Water Treatment
Teijin Ltd signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with PUB, the national water agency of Singapore, to carry out joint research and development in the area of used water treatment.
Signed on June 26th ,during the Singapore International Water Week (23rd to 27th June), the MOU allows both PUB and Teijin to investigate ways of advancing water recycling technology that offer both energy savings and better treatment efficiencies. Specifically under the MOU, both parties will carry out R&D on the improvements to the ozone disinfection treatment process and testing of an advanced oxidation technology (HiPOx and HiPOxPlus*) at PUB's facilities.
"The signing of the MOU with Teijin during the Singapore International Water Week will make the premier water event even more appealing to more than 5,000 industry leaders, experts and practitioners who will gather in Singapore to address water challenges and showcase water innovation and technology."
"This collaboration with Teijin will mark the beginning of joint knowledge-intensive programs and projects that will create the right environment for the generation of new R&D ideas, boosting Singapore's reputation as a global hydrohub," said Khoo Teng Chye, Chief Executive of PUB.
Water is an important aspect of Teijin's effort to develop the environment and energy field. As directed by the President of Teijin in August last year, a Water Purification Technology (WPT) project team has been set up to develop the process for recycling of used water that will save energy and reduce CO2, and to advance it to a business stage.
Under the MOU, Teijin will be able to carry out test-bedding of the ozone disinfection treatment process (HiPOx and HiPOxPlus*) at the final stage of the NEWater purification process. At the same time, a joint research programme in the field of material technology that will facilitate the purification of used water will also be conducted, together with a local university.
The Japan Business Forum is part of the Singapore International Water Week, a global platform for water solutions (23rd to 27th June 2008). It is one of the Water Week's seven business forums – exclusive networking sessions that will introduce participants to senior officials and potential business partners in Japan as well as the Middle East, China, India, South-east Asia, Australia and Europe.
The forums are an example of the high-level exchanges and business networking that will take place during the Singapore International Water Week, an annual conference and trade show attended by representatives from governments, utilities, businesses and academia.
PUB is a statutory board under the Singapore's Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources. It is the water agency that manages Singapore's water supply, water catchment and used water in an integrated way. NEWater, or recycled water, is one of the four sources of water for Singapore. The others are local catchment water, imported water and desalinated water.
Produced using advanced membrane technologies; the main use of NEWater in Singapore is to industries for use in wafer fabrication processes and non-potable applications in manufacturing processes as well as to commercial buildings for use in air-con cooling towers. A small percentage of NEWater is also blended with raw reservoir water before it undergoes conventional treatment at the waterworks and supplied to the public for drinking.
