Water distribution might sound as easy as passing water through pipes, but good municipal managers know better. With failing infrastructure rampant and an increased focus on operational efficiency, water quality, and conservation, distribution systems demand oversight and optimization.
Telog, A Trimble Company, produces products and software for collecting information from water distribution systems, and the company’s VP of sales, Greg DeSantis, talked to Water Online Radio about some key considerations that can sometimes be overlooked.
The following is an excerpt from the interview…
Water Online Radio: We talk all the time about how much technology has impacted this industry. …Some of the very smaller points, like pressure-reducing valves and gathering data there, [may] seem almost insignificant. But that’s not at all true, is it?
Greg: It’s not. It’s a very important feature for water distribution systems, to have pressure-reducing valves in place. Their primary function is to reduce the pressure coming from high-pressure zones, such as water towers, delivering water at a reasonable pressure to the municipal distribution system going into residences and industrial applications.
Water Online Radio: That pressure’s variable quite a bit, isn’t it?
Greg: It is, particularly in low-pressure applications, where you’ve got utilities operating at very low pressures and the swings between high and low are varying during times of use. It’s a very important function that the PRVs provide.
Water Online Radio: A very important function – it prevents pipe breaks [and] it decreases water loss, which is mission critical.
